Statement of Purpose (SOP) or letter of motivation play an important role while you are applying admission for MA/MSc/PhD in a university. Sometimes SOP is also required while applying for a job or a scholarships.
Here are six tips to write an successful statement of purpose to maximize chances to get admission in any university/college.
Tip-1; Tell about yourself: The university admission office want to know about your personality while you are not in front of them. So start SOP with your name, location and current occupation (study program or a job).
Tip-2; Describe your background: It is very important for the admission committee to make a match between your earlier education and your desired study program. So clearly tell them what you have studied before and if your work experience (if any) is relevant to your perspective study program, mention that too.
Tip-3; Describe your attributes that qualify you to study that specific program, you are applying to: To convince the admission committee to give you an admission, describe clearly that what attributes in your personality and experience make you best suitable for your desired program. Such attributes might be like punctuality, hardworking, team player, dedication in your work, cooperation with fellow students/colleagues, etc.
Tip-4; Explain why are you interested only in that school/department, you are applying to: There are many reasons that you want to study in a specific university/college e.g. availability of scholarships, international ranking, suggestion from your friend/teacher etc. So mention these reasons in your SOP so that admission committee know that you are really interested in their institute.
Tip-5; Mention your future goals: The purpose of this section is that admission committee want to know that how you see the use of that education which you would gain in your desired program of study. So please mention that how can you be useful for the society after completing study in the university, you want to get admitted in. This section is specially very important if you are writing an application for scholarship or PhD funding.
Tip-6; Write SOP with full interest, will power and hope of success: Writing SOP needs patience, interest and optimism. You can not finish an SOP in just an hour but you need many reviews from your teachers or expert writers. Therefore write your SOP with full enthusiasm and hope to succeed in securing admission.
